Nano Thag Lenge!
Nano ki mat maniyo re,
Nano ki mat mat Suniyo!
Na(i)no bawara kar denge,
Na(i)no thag lenge!
This 23rd March we all saw the rise of a small, Nano. The whole world knew that this particular day is Ratan Tata’s Birthday. Till now it was also known as “Shaheed Diwas (Martyr Day)” in India, still it will be. We as humans and Indians saw the formal death of the notions which made us sustainable or the lesser-evils in comparison to the rest of world.
Every other Indian is excited about this small wonder, for positive, for negative reasons and I am also a part of the excitement.
India Today is not just a developing Nation, it’s a transforming nation. The Image of this transforming nation is build up by various enhancers like Nuclear capabilities, IT achievements etc. Like US, we are also talking about a change. Unfortunately, the change is not equitable. Moreover, if investigated the change looks very materialistic, then also it is not uniform in any sense.
Though we are celebrating the arrival of Nano, for me, Nano is just a cheaper weapon to destroy mankind. With this statement I may be provoking lots of Indian sentiments, but one should really understand why I am compelled to call it a weapon.
With this approach I may be blamed as Communist/Maoist/etc. etc. But, I call myself a humanist who believes in sustainability. The sustainability which is often misinterpreted athe spectacle of materialistic development.
Some would say if America has developed its Time for India now to show its real potential. I think it is better to be happy, self-sufficient and sustainable rather being a Superpower for which you are cursed by every second person in the world.
Some would say that like every American, every Indian has the right to own a car. I believe that we don’t necessarily have to repeat or copy west for their crimes. Also, I believe that we have well crossed the age of Cars and the age of petroleum. It is a thing of Past.
If we have to really look for a development model, we should really look towards Scandinavia. One can say that population is too easy to handle any concept, but that would be accusing them for underperforming. All Scandinavian countries like Denmark, Sweden have successfully adopted the model of Public transport. The Private transport is the bicycle. Instead of the harsh weather conditions they are the most developed and happiest of the countries. Many Latin American Cities, Bogota and Curitiba, have adopted system like BRTS; where a socialist and true democratic approach has turned Red situations into Green. With all these approaches were supported by a strong political will and that thing for sure is missing in our country.
When US imposed a petroleum ban on Fidel’s Cuba, there was a food and lifestyle crisis in the country. But with the help of Communist China’s bi-Cycles and Anti-US Iran’s helpful petrol it survived the crisis. Not it only it survived but it blossomed. It realized the potential of Public Transport in the urban face and the magic of traditional organic (no-fertilizer) farming. According to UN, Cuba ranks low in Human Rights Conditions, but I believe in it has been projected badly by US and other allied powers. Focus is not Cuba here, but their self-sustainability.
Similarly, one should understand that the notion of Nano as a community is just a fake jingoism. Its not the holistic development of society.
Today it’s the need to understand the True meaning of Development. One should really investigate that is still a car is a symbol of development? With lack of infrastructure at various public levels more cars would add to the woes to the overall quality of life. We should now think that we should build more Roads or more Cars? We should ask TATA to build more Public means like Buses or more and more woes, Nanos?
