Google: Eight lamp of Architecture….
Warning: Following text is not an Architectural Satsang!
There are various reasons, why I am dedicating this glossy paper space on a very common phenomenon, which is subjective and highly individualistic in nature. The topic here is “studying architecture”. There are several interpretations prefixes & suffixes associated with this subject, but intention here is to explore the most (post)modernist attitude of studying [pursuing] architecture. The case may lie in any XYZ architecture school in the country, which is gradually exposing itself to the Google age.
Studying architecture in the Google Age
My seniors and teachers must be cribbing, on a regular basis, that why they were not born in this technologically advanced age, specially, when they see kiddos from the bachelor course utilizing / exploiting Google, the latest boon of the 21st century, to the maximum. They must be cribbing over the fact, that they were fools who were non-accessible to this internet era. Agreeing on the fact that means of escaping or avoiding bigger problems with some easy to follow solutions were present in the past; they must be cribbing over its reach and accessibility of the newer versions of “Duping instrument” by a young student.
Definition of Google interpreted by a debauched architecture student:
Google is an instrument (technically a search engine) through which any text/graphic can be traced and downloaded for a submission or a desired project, without understanding (even considering) the original context or the purpose. Whether you have to download any picture or want ready-made submissions, Google is the right place to hit. Advanced users and searchers often find a CAD file or a desired PPT for the submissions, and our non-updated faculty is never able to catch them.
Unfortunately, in our school we are not told or warn on these issues at very basic level. Submissions of comparatively impotent subjects are often a Copy-Paste or a compilation of processed data available on net. That is the reason why a student feels disappointed when he is caught by the faculty in advanced years. He always forgets that Google can be / is used by our faculty also. They are equally aware of Copy-Paste command as we are. In smaller countries like Bangladesh, students are aware of results and ills of plagiarism. But, here in India and especially in my school, this ism is just another ism, which is part of architecture application. And this ism has borrowed many characters from modernism, that it does not require any context.
I have not been to any architectural office, officially (as our training is in last semester of 5yrs), but I suspect that in most of the offices this will be a common phenomenon, may be in a different form. After studying with this attitude and practicing in the same manner, we expect our country to come with some identity, and compete west or the westernized east.
I often felt and interrogate myself that what is the right way to study architecture? But in the end I will have to admit that “everything is fair in love, war and studying architecture”. Any technological boon can be used or utilized in any way, be it Nuclear power or www.google.com.
